Equality and accessibility

At Cedars, every child and young person should feel valued, respected and able to participate. We work to remove barriers to learning and school life, and to treat pupils, families, staff and visitors fairly.

Our approach includes challenging discrimination, promoting equality of opportunity and helping people understand and respect one another.

 

Equality in practice

We recognise that people need different support to have equal opportunities.

We adapt teaching, communication and activities around pupils’ needs. We work with families and professionals to understand barriers and make reasonable adjustments.

Through our curriculum and everyday relationships, we help pupils learn about different backgrounds, identities and experiences. We take concerns about discrimination, harassment and bullying seriously.

 

Our published equality objectives

Our published Equality Statement and Objectives identifies four areas for action:

• ensuring that the curriculum and reading materials reflect a diverse range of people, cultures and experiences

• developing pupils’ understanding of equality and protected characteristics through personal, social, health and relationships education

• agreeing reasonable adjustments with disabled staff to address barriers at work

• training staff and trustees involved in recruitment and selection in equal opportunities and non-discrimination.

Accessibility planning

Accessibility includes being able to take part in learning, move around the school environment and understand the information we provide.

Our accessibility plan addresses three areas:

• increasing disabled pupils’ participation in the curriculum and wider school activities

• improving the physical environment so disabled pupils can access education, facilities and services

• improving how information is provided to disabled pupils.
