Working at Cedars
Cedars is a warm and welcoming school community where staff help children and young people to communicate, learn, build relationships and become as independent as they can be.
Across Low Fell and High Heworth, colleagues bring different skills, experiences and perspectives. Whether you work in teaching, learning support, administration, catering or premises, your contribution matters.
Why work here?
We want Cedars to be a place where staff feel supported, can contribute their ideas and keep developing professionally.
Working here means:
-
being part of a team that values relationships and knows its pupils well
-
working alongside teachers, therapists, families and other professionals
-
using practical, creative and sensory approaches to help pupils learn
-
access to specialist learning spaces, therapeutic facilities and outdoor environments
-
opportunities to develop your knowledge and contribute to improvements across the academy.
We value curiosity, reflection and a willingness to keep learning. No one is ever the finished article, and that is how we like it.
Bringing experience from care or support work
You may already have skills that would make a real difference at Cedars, even if you have never worked in a school.
Experience in care, residential support, youth work or supporting a family member can help you understand the importance of patience, dignity, communication and trusting relationships.
Our classroom teams support learning, communication, emotional wellbeing and, where needed, personal care. They need to be calm, adaptable and non-judgemental, able to respond thoughtfully when a pupil is finding something difficult. Working well with colleagues is just as important as using your own initiative.

We welcome applications from experienced practitioners and people bringing relevant skills from other settings. Each advert explains the qualifications and experience needed, including where there is an opportunity to work towards a qualification.
Learning and development
Staff are encouraged to bring their ideas, reflect on their practice and help shape their professional development.
Training and support are matched to the role and the needs of the pupils. This can include communication approaches, assistive technology, sensory needs and support for emotional regulation.
Working alongside experienced colleagues and specialist professionals provides opportunities to learn, share ideas and build confidence. Relevant vacancies may also offer opportunities to develop mentoring or leadership responsibilities.
