Our curriculum starts with the child. Each pupil has their own starting point and their own ambitions, and we use these to build a personal pathway for them. Learning is matched to each pupil's stage of development, not their age.

Across both sites, our curriculum

• is built around each pupil's EHCP outcomes and their Personal Learning Plan

• puts communication, relationships and emotional wellbeing at its core

• values play and practical, real-life learning

• prepares pupils for adult life, using the four Preparing for Adulthood areas: work, independent living, friends and community, and good health

• treats every part of the school day as a chance to learn, from lunchtime to travel

• is planned with families, therapists and other professionals

Behaviour and regulation

We take a positive, relationship-based approach to behaviour. We teach pupils the skills to understand and manage their feelings. Staff stay calm, avoid confrontation and help pupils to reflect and learn after difficult moments.

 

How we measure progress

We look at each pupil’s progress from their own starting point, including the outcomes in their Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP). Staff record and review learning over time and share progress with pupils and families. The approaches and systems used may differ between Low Fell and High Heworth; the site learning pages explain these in more detail.
